Kathie Billing is a wife, mother, animal activist, wellness warrior, and 3-time cancer survivor. On any given day you may find Kathie out riding her horses, snowshoeing, practicing yoga or pilates, taking a bike ride, running, cross-country skiing, swimming, or even teaching a fitness class. Whatever it is…Kathie will be on the move. Her health and wellness journey began early when she became an RN in 1982. During that time preventative medicine was also a focus for her. She worked as an Aerobic Instructor part-time during her nursing career at UNC Chapel Hill. One thing you’ll learn about Kathie is her incredible resilience and her unstoppable passion for life. It’s something that’s hard to capture in an online bio, but we’ll try!
Cancer. Kathie will tell you her battle with cancer has been a blessing. Her experiences with preventive healthcare during her cancer treatment have driven her to guide other women and cancer survivors to be an ACTIVE part in their journey to wellness through the use of yoga, fitness, and self-nourishment. Kathie set out to become a knowledgeable source for women moving through their life journey as well as seeking balance, health, and community. She has earned a certification in post-operative rehabilitation for breast cancer through the Pink Ribbon Program. In addition she holds certifications as a 200-hour Yoga Alliance teacher, cancer massage, and Aquatic Arthritis. Kathie has been involved in the creation and implementation of several programs in the community. Before the inception of Soul Moving Yoga, she was a founding member of the Cancer Resource Alliance. Currently she is the co-founder and creator of “The Beauty Mark Committee” (A collaboration between Appalachian State and the community), an active Humane Society board member, Co-chair of the annual DOG JOG in Boone, and has taught aquatic and yoga classes to women affected by cancer. She is also the founder of a closed quilting group called “Soul Stitching” that meets biweekly at her farmhouse. Currently she is teaching yoga classes at the Boone Healing Arts Center & Neighborhood Yoga. Check out her schedule and drop in for a class when you can!
Her educational background, community involvement, and her journey with cancer have given her the knowledge and platform to give back to other women and survivors. Kathie writes, “I was in search for a place that was safe. Someone to guide me in to healing my body, mind, and spirit…a place that would involve my whole self in this journey with cancer that was now a part of my life”. Today, Kathie wants to provide that safe haven for those just starting their journey to wellness through knowledgeable and mindful exercise, stress-reduction, and one-on-one consulting. She aims to give back to the community that gave her the gift of wellness and support during her journey with cancer…through Soul Moving Yoga. Read more about her organization here.
